Veterans Step Up To The Tee To Support Veterans Golf Course Rehabilitation Program With $80,000 Donation

Xylem donation of Flowtronex golf course pumping system unveiled at 2012 Golf Industry Show to support the rehabilitation of wounded and disabled veterans

When a group of Xylem military veterans learned about a great opportunity to support wounded and disabled veterans in their recovery, they were going to do everything possible to make it happen. Xylem unveiled the donated Flowtronex Silent Storm Express pump system in their booth (1470) at the 2012 Golf Industry Show before shipping it to the American Lake Veterans Golf Course.Prior to the Golf Industry Show, Xylem held a dedication ceremony, which involved Xylem military vets signing the pump system they helped build and an overview of the project from Audrey Pinkerton, General Manager, Flowtronex, a Xylem brand. Other interesting facts about the ALVGC project are:

  • Xylem’s military veterans built the equipment being donated
  • Driven by Jack Nicklaus and Nicklaus Design, other notable donors of products and services include Bryant Taylor Gordon Golf, an irrigation design company, and Landscapes Unlimited, for course development and construction
  • Specially designed golf carts allow disabled veterans to play golf
  • There will be over 35,000 rounds of golf per year
  • There are nearly 250 volunteers that maintain the golf course
  • All golf is free of charge to disabled veterans

It was a very proud moment to have all our veterans sign the pump and a great asset to our booth at the Golf Show. It’s all very patriotic,” said Audrey Pinkerton.

As Global Sales Manager for Xylem’s Flowtronex brand of packaged pumping systems for turf irrigation, John Murtaugh and a group of his co-workers, including some who were military veterans, stepped up to the tee and took the lead in championing efforts to provide an $80,000 Flowtronex golf course pump irrigation system for the American Lake Veterans Golf Course (ALVGC).

“The American Lake Veterans Golf Course is the only course in the country that is completely accessible to wounded and disabled veteran and we were honored to contribute our pump system and to be a part of giving back to our veterans,” said Murtaugh.

The pump system is a crucial element in the renovation of the current 9-hole course and in the building of an additional 9-holes. The veterans-only golf course helps in the healing process from all types of physical and mental wounds and relies on private donations and volunteers to run it.

“We were approached by some very recognizable names in golf due to our expertise in building packaged pumping systems for the golf, landscaping, municipality and sports markets. Our system was on their wish list,” explained Murtaugh.

The course was originally constructed as a nine-hole place of respite – not rehabilitation- in 1955, on the grounds of the Veterans Administration hospital at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, near Tacoma, Washington. The golf course, situated on 377 acres, was added shortly after World War II. However, the special needs of the disabled to play golf was not taken into account. Still, it was a valued asset of the hospital and served patients healing from all types of injuries for many years.

In the fall of 2009, the Friends of American Lake Veterans Golf Course embarked upon a major campaign to gather funds to expand and enhance the facility. A capital campaign fundraiser was held at BIGHORN Golf Club in Palm Desert where Jack Nicklaus was the featured speaker. This event raised $1,300,000. Jack signed on as Honorary Chairman, as did General John Shalikashvili, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under President Clinton. Phil Knight of Nike endorsed the program. Other major foundations and companies are supporting the efforts, as does the Order of the Purple Heart, the United States Golf Association, and both the national and the local USO, as well as others.

The opening date for the 9-holes has yet to be announced, but is expected later this year.

American Lake Veterans Golf Course and their Rehabilitation and Learning Center give every disabled veteran the chance they deserve using golf as part of the healing process. The companies participating in this project are dedicated in building a new 9, which has been designed by Jack Nicklaus. To see what it offers veterans, visit:
